Thailand

What if you plan a business trip and all you want to really do is…do business? It might be difficult when the country you’re traveling to is Thailand.

*****FROM GREG WATANABE*******
In an effort to respond to some of the negative comments about this sketch, I offer an explanation (note, I didn’t write this sketch):

This piece is primarily about how some people’s view of Thailand is distorted by it’s reputation as a destination for sex tours. There are many reasons how this came to be, none of them are Thailand’s per se. The U.S. military is probably the most to blame.

Clearly, as the sketch itself points out, there are many other aspects of Thailand to be proud of.

As an Asian American, the fetishization of the Asian female is a familiar topic. The view of Asian or Asian American females as sex objects is both an issue of sexism and racism. On a national scale, the stereotypical view of Thailand as a destination for exotic prostitution is an issue of de facto military occupation and economic colonization.

For me, this piece is about the stereotypes of Thailand and unfair and hypocritical treatment it receives from other countries.

It is a pity that …
It is a pity that the producer is a uneducated and pessimistic person. You do not know anything about Thailand. If you call yourself “the citizen of First world Countries”, you should know that “Thailand is not called Third World countries” any more. You look down on Thai people with your pervert view. If you really know Thailand, you will know that Thai people are generous. Thailand is the land of smile. And, the parents teach their daughter to be virgin until they get married.

This video was produced based on bad intentions of the producer, as a result, it has no value what so ever. Try something more intelligent next time.

    Without proper …
Without proper background, jokes are hard to get. And that’s why most Thai people, including me, don’t get it. This just appears as a lame, ineffective joke to me, no matter how hard I’ve tried to grab what you guys said (e.g. satire). Sorry to say that.

    It’s very satirical …
It’s very satirical, and I think a lot of people out there don’t get satirical comedy. There are enough “tells” in this clip that gives that away, but, for example, go check out The Onion’s channel, and there are tons of people there who are fooled by the satire and take it far too seriously. Granted, there are forms of satire that do not work, but I think this clip on Thailand shows it’s making fun of the belief that Thailand’s all about sex.

I hate this kind of video. Don’t judge things that you don’t really know. I live here at Thailand. Yeah I have to admit that most of our country is poor but not all of it. Bangkok is a very civlized place in some area. But there’s only ONLY 3 small street that are name for prostitute street actually it’s not a street it’s a soi(a smaller street) and each are about 600 metre long. Don’t judge things you don’t know. How would you feel when somebody tell you that your country have nothing but sex.

(and why are the haters so hung up on a little sex anyways)

    Many countries in …
Many countries in the world have legal prostitution locations, in Europe and in the United States also. Ever heard of the state of Nevada, U.S.A.? Also, illegal prostitution in America is so common, it’s ridiculous. So should we assume all American women are prostitutes, and that people only go to the United States for prostitutes? Of course not.

I’m American, and would like to say that “westerners” who has a fetish for Asian women often view Thailand as the land of Asian prostitutes, when only a small part of the country is involved with such a thing.
