Is Thailand the place where loads of men have surgery to become women?

February 28th, 2010 | by admin |

My aunt’s friend visited Thailand and said she went to a show with men who went through countless surgeries to become women. That they wanted to become women so badly, even though they know they’ll only live to 40 maximum. Is Thailand really the place where all this happens?! What is the show called?

I agree with Erica.

I also find the wording of your question offensive. Men don’t "become" women. Transsexual women recieve treatment for their birth condition. Educate yourself:

A transsexual women is a woman who was born into a male body, but they were never men.

A transsexual man is a man who was born into a female body, but they were never women.

And for your information transsexual men also recieve treatment in Thailand as well. Treatment is offered in a couple dozen countries, but Thailand has become a major center for such treatment. It’s estimated half of all surgeries take place there.

Thailand is a popular destination for the surgery to complete the transgendering process.

There is a large population of people in Thailand referred to as Kathoey or "ladyboys." Its a diverse group made up of sex workers, showgirls, cabaret singers, beauticians, etc, most of whom are transgender males who have taken hormones and gotten breast implant surgery so as to appear female. Some are transsexual women who seek full SRS, but most are content with their male genitals. The society views them as almost a "third gender", tolerated… but not fully accepted in the way men and women are. I’ve never heard of them only living to 40. That sounds like nonsense. Ladyboys can be found everywhere in Thailand, but most favor urban centers, where they perform at many different venues.

Thailand is a popular place for such transformations but I think the only living to 40 is nonsense. I personally know three post op transsexuals and they are all over 40

    Nope.

Thailand is one of several place where some trans women decide to have SRS.

Thailand is not the only place where surgery is offered, SRS does not make a person a woman, trans women are already women, the surgery can be done quite well and safely in many cases, and to my knowledge there is no such show where the surgeries are performed for public viewing.
