Getting into Thailand during the protest?

March 10th, 2010 | by admin |

I have my vacation planned in Thailand on 12/7. I cannot get any time off after that. Is there another way to get into Thailand other than flying into the airports that the protesters are occupying? Perhaps fly into Malaysia or Cambodia? Please be specific as to how I can do this as I need to know if this can be done and how. Thanks.

It would help to know where your coming from. some flights go to Chiang Mai or Phuket airports. Also you can fly to Malaysia and take train or bus into Thailand.

    You can get into Thailand for your vacation but, can you leave when it’s over? There is no end in sight. Getting on a plane in your home country won’t be a problem but right now there are 100,000 people trying to left with very few flights out. Maybe double that by Dec 7. I am in Bangkok now on vacation and everything seems normal (normal for Bangkok) but I would like to leave eventually. I would try to change my vacation plans if I were you – maybe change countries. I don’t see this being fixed by the time you leave for Bangkok.

    If you are coming from Melbourne Australia Quantas and Thai airways fly to Phuket,Other wise fly to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore and go by train. Or fly to Vientiane, ( You will need a visa on arrival costing $US35 or $US36 after hours ) then cross the friendship bridge to Nongkai in N.E.Thailand ( arguably the best part of Thailand any way )

    If you can get yourself to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur or Penang in Malaysia you should be able to get a flight on Air Asia, Tiger Airways, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly Airlines (they fly from Penang to Koh Samui), Silk Air and others fly to Phuket, and Silk Air also flies non-stop from Singapore to Chiang Mai. Bangkok Airways flies from Hong Kong to Koh Samui. Airlines like Cathay Pacific and Korean Airlines and China Airlines fly to Phuket from Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei. You can also get to Thailand by train from Singapore or Malaysia. If you can get to Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar you can travel overland into Thailand, but depending on your nationality will most likely need a visa to enter those countries. Thai Airways and a few other airlines are diverting some Bangkok flights to Pattaya’s Utapao Airport. There are a lot of options and hopefully both Bangkok airports will be open by then, good luck.

    going to laos wouldnt work as you would have to go via bkk!
    you can go many ways but unfortunatley they will all ebnd up involving silly transfer times etc, which is your time wasted isnt it!
    From what im hearing this protest might get violent around bkk and maybe last a little longer than people think(im talking days not weeks) so clearing the backlog even if they opened again on tuesday means you aint goin that way!
    So, you have to ask yourself, is it worh the hassle?? you could just go to the phillipines or wherever offers the same things your after and maximise your time! thats what ide be doin anyway mate, my times mine and im not goin to spend lots of it worryin about how to get somewhere!bah!

    If you can’t take risk, do enter Thailand, just settle for Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia

    We have a lot of prostitutes too in those countries

    U-Tapao military airport is opened for commercial flights. You need to check the flight whether there will be any airlines start flying into that airport, but for now some airlines are flying out so that the stranded tourists can get out. Besides, Chiangmai and Phuket international airports are still funcitoning so the best bet is to fly there from Hong Kong or Singapore, then take a bus or train into Bangkok.
    Bus or train from Chaingmai will take somewhat 8-10 hours (train is more comfortable but slower). From Phuket it takes a little bit longer, don’t know though if there’s a train from Phuket, but you can still take a bus.
    Another better way is to take a cruise from Hong Kong or Singapore which may take a few days but lots more expensive; like 2000 USD at least.

    I would suggest flying into Chiang Mai, its the largest airport in the north, and not likely to get shut down, the protesters already tried once and were pretty firmly booted out. You can fly into Chiang Mai from Kuala Lumpu (air asia), Taipei (Chine Airlines), Siam Reap (Bangkok Airways), Seoul (Korean Air), Luang Prabang (Lao Air) and Singapore (Silk Airway) if you want to get back down to Bangkok then, you can take an overnight bus.

    Air Asia would be the cheapest of these airlines, but they are also somewhat unreliable as far as being on time, I’m personally looking into flying out of Chiang Mai to Taipei to get home (I’m scheduled to go out of BKK on the 15th) and flew China Airlines over here, they seem pretty reliable and reasonably priced.

    I really hope this helps and I hope you are able to enjoy your trip to Thailand, happy travels and happy holidays!

    You can get into Vientaine Wattay Airport on the following airlines and Nong Khai Thailand is about 12 miles away.
    You can get a train or bus to bangkok for $30US. Or you can
    stay in the area. Its very cheap since few people visit. You could stay 15 days in Laos, then come to Thailand visit Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nakhorn Phanom, That Pahnom, Mukdahan. Plenty of women here would love to have a farang boyfriend and there’s lots of farang bars because of the US military being here during the Vietnam war.
    Airlines that support Wattay
    * AirAsia (Kuala Lumpur) One way 9 Dec $108 US
    * China Eastern Airlines (Kunming)
    * China Southern Airlines (Guangzhou)
    * Lao Airlines (Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Houei Sai, Kunming, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Pakse, Phongsaly, Sam Neua, Sayaboury, Siem Reap, Xieng Khuang)
    * Vietnam Airlines (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh)

    Check for a ticket to Singapore as they are usually the cheapest and then you can fly to KL (maybe $25US) or take a bus for $15 bucks (5 hours).

    Can fly Hong Kong direct into Chiang Mai, in the North of Thailand. From Chiang Mai can take a train, bus or even taxi to any points south.
