Is Thailand dangerous now?

March 17th, 2010 | by admin |

I am planning to go to Thailand next week. There are news about protesters crippling city functions, with crazy requests to the government like electing 70% of congressmen from the so-called elite group without votes.

Could anybody who’s been there recently tell me if it would be OK to plan the trip as scheduled?

A few shutdown of tourist spots are find, but delays in the road and especially in the AIR would be horrible.

That balloon was deflated this morning. Samak won. The Government stands. The protesters, with a tear in their eye will soon be getting in their Mercedes and going back to their Villas.

The referendum next month will fail because Samak has the votes. The lumpen proletariat has beaten the bourgeoisie and fascism has been averted.

In a week or so the LOS will be back to normal and you can lay on a beach an drink you self silly without fear.

Right now as of this minute your be fine. All airports are open, roads open, no strikes and life as normal (as it can be in Thailand) I think the protesters have realized that they are hurting themselves by causing hardships for tours. You should be fine coming here, just use common sense and don’t get involved in the protest, it’s not your business.

Also while your here remember to take in the move Bangkok Dangerous with Nicholas Cage ( one of my favorite actors along with Bruse Willis)

The P.A.D. is the acronym the protesting hordes use. They’re against a govt. they perceive to be corrupt and self-serving (and it is ). There’s a danger that airport traffic may be affected – they managed to shut Hat Yai, Suratthani and Phuket for a day or so – but the main worry at the moment is that there may be street clashes in Bangkok between the protesters and the army, now (supposedly) in control of the country. Having said that, I don’t think you’ll experience any problems at all. Come on down!

Oddly, there’s a movie coming out with similar name as your question, but it’s not Thailand but Bangkok Dangerous!
My feeling about Bangkok now is like when you play SIM city. If you screw up some of the budgeting on fail to create something, there’s bunch of people coming out protesting on the streets. Is it dangerous, yes, if you go near them. Apart from that everything is pretty much normal. I still have loads of work to do.
Industrial actions can happen anywhere (especially postal strike in the UK near Christmas time!) So, be prepared but don’t overly panic. I think you’ll be fine.

If you were here right now and stayed away from the protests which is very easy to do, you wouldn’t notice any difference at all from a normal day here. As of now, there are no airports that are closed, the roads in Bangkok are always clogged, but no worse than normal. I live in Bangkok and am out everyday in different areas of the city, I have yet to see a protest or have encountered any closed businesses or offices. Things could change and the protests could become more widespread, but if things stay as they are, right now is probably not a bad time to be here.

I agree with Gerald and Bob. Life is going on much the same as usual.
If your on the beach, no radio, no TV, you wouldn’t know anything about protests.

The airports are back to normal.

No problems with power cuts, and most hotels will have an emergency generator anyway.Lots of places outside of Bangkok still use well water, or rain water.

I was here in Phuket for the last military coup, and for last years removal of Thaksin, most of the tourists had no idea at all, so don’t worry, just get on that plane and come and enjoy yourself!
