I am going on holiday to thailand any advice?
January 31st, 2010 | by admin |Just anything at all you think i could benefit from knowing.
When the clock strikes 6 or 6.30 Bangkok time, stay very still and don’t move. They’ll be singing their national anthem. The locals will scold you if you dare move. No kidding!
And don’t ever mock their king….they treat their king with a lot of reverence.
Don’t take the tuk-tuk…the drivers will cheat you. Also they have two types of subways…one’s underground and one’s above. Just don’t get confused.
Usually massage parlours aren’t for massages only.
Also, the clothes are pretty small…for petite frames, I guess. So if you are thinking of getting clothes there, think twice.
Wear proper shoes when you are there. When it’s rainy, the ground gets pretty muddy…you really don’t want me to elaborate, do you?

Don’t buy any drugs. Or take any. They have zero tolerance and the death penalty.

Take a warm jumper! They are obsessed with air conditioning so their shops and offices and restaurants and buses are absolutely freezing cold. I spent the night on a bus going from Bangkok to the south and I’d never had such a cold night. They don’t seem to notice it – it’s bizarre.

Watch out for the Jewellery scam. Someone or several different apparently unconnected people through the day will try to tell you of an amazing opportunity for buying jewellery or stones cheaply and then selling them for a good amount of money.
If you’re going for a long time, better to travel to fewer places and rest there for a week rather than being on the move each day- cause you spend a lot of time with timetables etc and waste time that you could use relaxing and enjoying yourself.
If you’re in Phuket, learn how to scuba dive. If in Koh Samui (an island) go to the North West coast. It’s gorgeous. In Bangkok watch a Muay Thai (kickboxing) competition; it’s pretty good.
Have a reserve of money back at home that you can call on in an emergency. Don’t take too much stuff. In the North it can be like British weather, in the South the opposite. Rather than insect repellant use ‘coils’, these things you burn in your room.

Read about the country’s culture and its people. You can search the internet. It helps a lot to know what Thais are, their beliefs and customs and lifestyle before you get there. So you would at least know the basic "taboos" of the Thai society – so you dont end up in trouble with anyone and the law.

Try to take the airport bus and NOT a taxi as they overcharge ridiculously. Bangkok airport is freezing so either get out quick or take something warm.
You MUST try banana pancakes and the fried noodle things you buy on the street. DELICIOUS! If you want to stay at Khaosan Road, dont stay right on in but in the street just behind it – still good but cheaper and quieter, and if you plan on travelling by bus across country, get there early so you get the front seats which have more space.
If you are in Phuket and want to go to the smller islands, just haggle with the tour companies and you will get it for WAY cheaper that the leaflets say.
Have a great stay. Its fabulous!
