Bangkok Airways jet crashes in Samui, Thailand

A Bangkok Airways ATR72 aircraft crashed this afternoon after skidding off the runway at Samui Airport. According to an asiatraveltips.com report, Flight PG 266, which was flying from the popular tourist destination of Krabi, also in Southern Thailand, crashed while landing in heavy wind and rain.

The aircraft veered off to the right and smashed into an old air control tower causing extreme damage to the front of the plane. Medical services used the rear door to help remove passengers. The pilot of the plane has been reported dead, along with one confirmed passenger death.

Sadly we have learnt that the pilot of the aircraft has died and so far ten passengers are confirmed wounded, said Kannikar Kemavuthanon, Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation. There were 68 passengers aboard the 70-seater aircraft when it crashed. Krabi and Samui are both extremely popular tourist destinations with foreigners and Thais alike.
