The capital city of Thailand – Bangkok is one of the world’s biggest cities as well as the top among the Asia’s hotspots. With its attractions that are a blend of traditional and modern, Bangkok has not only lured the people touring the destination but also has attracted many foreigners to stay here permanently.
From more than 400 ancient temples and incredible palaces to interesting museums and lively markets including Chatuchak Market and floating markets, attractions in Bangkok are truly endless. Discussed further in this article are some of the not-to-miss attractions in Bangkok.
Grand Palace: Built in 1782, the Grand Palace is a magnificent structure, much famed for its intricate architectural designs. The palace provides you a deep insight into the history of Thai royalty.
Temple of the Reclining Buddha: Located adjacent to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, otherwise known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is the largest as well as one of the oldest temples in the city. As the name indicates, the centerpiece of the temple is a splendid image of Lord Buddha in reclining posture. A school of traditional massage can also be found within the temple, where you can indulge in rejuvenating as well as refreshing Thai massage.
Wat Phra Kaeo: Also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Phra Kaeo is located within the precincts of the Grand Palace and is regarded as the most prominent Buddhist shrine in the region. A highly revered image of Lord Buddha that has been scrupulously carved out from a single block of jade is enshrined in the temple.
Wat Arun: Otherwise known as the Temple of Dawn, this temple features an 80 meters high magnificent Pagoda.
National Museum: Once used as a palace, the National Museum has on display the arts and artifacts ranging from the periods of Neolithic and Ayutthaya times to modern times.
National Gallery Museum: Exhibited here are traditional and contemporary works created by Thai artists.
Philatelic Museum: It is a must-see destination for stamp enthusiasts. One can also buy stamp from here.
Vimanmek Mansion Museum: It is credited to be the largest teak building in the world. With about 80 rooms and halls spread over its three stories, the museum displays a large number of royal memorabilia.
Ancient City: It holds the distinction of being the world’s largest outdoor museum. Sprawling over an area of about 250 acres, the museum displays gigantic sized replicas of renowned temples, monuments, and buildings that are spread across the country.
Chao Phraya River: Set against the backdrop of historical landmarks comprising ancient shrines and stunning palaces, the river is one of the most significant attractions in the area.
Snake Farm: Snake Farm, officially the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, is one of the Asia’s largest producers of anti-venom Serum in Asia.
Crocodile Farm: More than 50,000 fresh and seawater can be seen here. The farm also houses other animals such as elephants, lions, snakes, and gibbons.
Chinatown: A bustling area in the city, packed with an array of Chinese shops and restaurants. In fact, it is always crowded, particularly during the Chinese New Year.
Points of interests in and around Bangkok also include Wha Mahathat, Wat Ratchanatdaram, Wat Indravihan, Wat Bowon Niwet, Erawan Shine, and Jim Thompson House. Apart from these, people touring the place could engage in a number of activities such as spa and golf, with an array of golf courses of international standards, such as Kantarat Golf Course, Royal Bangkok Sports Club, and Royal Thai Army Sports Center. Also, while your stay at Bangkok, take a chance to enjoy the vibrant nightlife of the city and experience the exhilaration of traditional Thai Muay boxing.
The fame of the city is further enhanced by some of the most upscale as well as luxurious hotels in the region. Many of the hotels in the region come with more than 100 guest rooms, all of which are elegantly appointed with such comforts as air conditioning, automatic wake up call, coffee and tea making facilities, hair dryer, mini bar, safety deposit box, TV with satellite connection, Wi-Fi High speed wireless Internet service, and more.
There are also some hotels providing one-bedroom suites attached with facilities like balcony and kitchenette. When comes to facilities, hotels are mostly complete with two or more restaurants, wine bar, swimming pools, state of the art fitness centers, spa facilities, and banquet facilities coupled with most sophisticated equipments.

Phuket is the spectacularly beautiful tropical island off the southern coast of Thailand. Known as the Pearl of the South, it offers a diverse mixture of outstanding natural beauty, culture, sport, crazy nightlife or simple relaxation. It caters for everyone, of all ages, budgets, and needs, and is one of Asia’s most popular destinations.
The breathtaking scenery of Phuket simply demands to be explored, and its variety means you will never get bored. Whether you wish to visit the mountains, the tropical jungle, the stunning waterfalls or sea caves, a number of excursions, on foot, boat or on elephant, allow you to discover the untamed interior. Of course, Phuket is also famed for its sandy, palm-lined beaches and warm blue waters, and between enjoying the sunshine on the beach or the various water-sports on offer, such as scuba diving or water-skiing, you will be spoilt for choice.
As well as the magnificent scenery, Phuket also offers a wide variety of activities that will fill your days. For those interested in exploring Phuket’s culture there is plenty to see. A number of Buddhist temples dot the island, the most important and beautiful being Wat Chalong on the southern end of the island. Phuket also has an interesting history, having been located on the trading routes between India and China from the seventeenth century, and subject to competition between European powers for its tin. Old Phuket town still has its colonial architecture and is a must see for those interested in the rich history of Phuket. A visit to the villages of the Chao Leh, or sea-gypsies, along the coast is worth a visit too. Having earned their living in the nineteenth century through piracy or pearl diving, the Chao Leh are now predominantly fishermen, and they offer a glimpse of the other side of this tropical island. Other popular attractions include a trip to the Phuket Fantasea, a unique cultural theme park, or watching Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing. There are also a number of festivals throughout the year that are a mix of celebration and spiritualism for the islanders. And on those days you don’t feel like exploring Phuket’s rich heritage and culture, there is also great shopping to be had!
If, after packing your days with action, you still have the energy to continue, then Phuket also offers a fantastic nightlife- and again, caters for everyone. Patong is the most hedonistic and raucous destination, crammed with go-go bars, discos, restaurants and bars. It is the home of the Simon Cabaret, a mesmerising and fantastical transvestite cabaret which simply needs to be seen. Just as vibrant, although less frenetic, is Karon, while the areas of Kata and Phuket City offer a more family friendly and laid back atmosphere, with a touch of local flavour. Of course, the morning after can be a little stressful, and a number of Spas aim to rebalance your well being in a serene and calm environment. Failing that, a few rounds of gold on one of Phuket’s many golf courses might do the trick.
Phuket can be many different things to different people, being at once energetic, hedonistic, exciting, untamed, spiritual, secluded, relaxing and cultural. It offers you the chance to fill your days and nights with action, fun or leisure, whether through exploration, sport, culture, or simply a day at the beach.

The Thailand hotel   As I sit here waiting for news, I look out of my hotel window at the Bangkok skyline. A mist settles in the distance as a red sun starts to set between each hazy cloud. Tall modern buildings spread before me, the occasional glimpse of a bird, a plane and then the sky train-Thailand’s mass transit comforts me as if to say at least someone is there, thinking, working to find my brother who has not been heard of in six months. To one side of the view I think I can make out a temple in the distance- the Grand Palace perhaps? The silence in this room is almost deafening, I hear nothing but see everything. Not even a sound from a neighbouring room, or the footsteps from the hallway of newly arriving guests. I drop a holy bible to the floor just to break the silence-just to make sure I’m not dreaming.   I’m not dreaming-to kill time I slowly count the carved shapes in the wooden corners of the ceiling, as I stare at each carving I can see a face that each one resembles- a friendly face, no a fearful face or just ones that reflect my current state of mind.    I ponder on the idea of having another Chivas Regal from the mini bar. I change my mind since a drunken state would only magnify this feeling of despair and loss. This room is about 30 meters square in all, large for a hotel room-large enough to fit this rather ornate King size double at any rate. Everything is perfect about this room. Its only imperfection is that it is too perfect. Maybe I should have stayed somewhere less perfect? I smile at the idea of writing a review and giving this Bangkok hotel a low rate; my reasons being.   (1) The hotel room smells too clean, its smells as though it’s never been lived in . (2)The room is too quiet, the silence is so loud it hurts my ears and gives me a sense of isolation. There’s no pleasing some is there?   Had it not been for this hotel’s location, high speed internet and good phone access, I wouldn’t have chosen this hotel. For a start I can’t afford it. And besides, if I was going to stay at a five star hotel in Bangkok Thailand I would have surely saved these moments for happier times. Not brought out here on the recommendation of the embassy to help look for Danny who went walkabout in the jungle one day and never returned. It seems strange that no one was that concerned at the time. But when I raised the alarm with the embassy, police and then the tour operators only then the locals began to remember.   Conveniently remembering my brother. Danny, he was the star in my family, a bit of a whiz who needless to say outshone his older brother. Even appeared on TV on one of those quiz game shows and won!  Danny the adventurer the strong- I call room service, they answer immediately (too quickly). I order Pat Thai (Thai noodles) and within 7 minutes it arrives at my door. The service is stupendous.   This hotel is amazing, like nowhere I’ve ever stayed before. It’s like a dream, a dream that I wish I could wake from. If anyone knows anything about Danny, please let us or someone know.

Among the many places in Thailand, Chiangmai comes well recommended, and for very good reasons. Travelers point to the many amazing sights and things to do in this laidback city situated in the Himalayan foothills. For visitors exploring Thailand, Chiangmai never ceases to amaze. Small wonder luxury hotels (like Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai) near this destination are frequented by travelers who want to be near where the popular sights and activities are. With Buddhist temples and other historic sites to the majestic mountains, the handicrafts, the shopping finds, people, the food and bustling night life, Chiangmai offers no dull moment for the curious and adventuresome traveler. While in Thailand, Chiangmai is the kind of place that will strike you as serene because most of the people are not rushing about as they do in other key cities around the world. It may as well be referred to as a pastoral paradise, the kind you are likely to read about in books. Imagine getting all cozy in a nice, well-appointed villa that looks out to hushed paddy-fields and lush hills and mountains beyond them. It’s a perfect place to commune with nature and feel close to God. Actually, for people who visit Northern Thailand, Chiangmai offers respite as a spiritual haven. Pilgrims visit one of the most revered temples of the Thais – the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. It is actually an awe-inspiring 14th century Buddhist architectural showcase. The temple was erected in 1386 by King Keuna the Great. Legend has it that the temple’s site was chosen when an elephant carrying half of a holy relic ascended the mountains after several days and circled the temple spot before kneeling down and dying. A visit to Thailand, Chiangmai particularly, will not be complete without seeing the sacred temple. There are other lovely temples in Chiangmai. You can explore the oldest to the noblest ones, including the Wat Suan Dok, which holds the ashes of Chiang Mai’s former Royal Family members. In another chapel lies one of Thailand’s largest icons in metal – a 500-year old bronze Buddha. You may also want to visit the temple compound where the divine Lai Kham chapel, with its remarkable murals and woodcarvings, is situated,For a dose of history, there is another must-see while exploring Thailand. Chiang Mai National Museum will fascinate you no end with its collection of Lanna Thai artworks, ancient, war weaponry, and antique Buddha images. Shopaholics are also bound to have a heyday at Thailand’s night bazaars. For those who would rather watch artisans at work in the villages, a number of cottage industries and handicrafts ranging from parasols, silk weaving, jewelry, woodcarving, silverware, and lacquerware, to name a few, may suit you fine. Are you raring for an anthropological adventure? Try a river cruise that travels down The Chang pier. This is where elephants used to haul logs from the river in the old days. The pier derived its name from the king’s elephants, which used to bathe on that site. You will see some of Thailand’s firsts – first bridge, first post office, and other interesting sites and get a whiff of the including lifestyles of the locals who dwelled on opposite sides of the river, plus some historic spots along the riverbanks. All these you can enjoy at a leisurely pace. Check out online travel resources for Thailand and you are bound to have a fantastic experience you will be able to delightfully recount to your family and friends.

Railay is a peninsula made up of four beaches, each separated from its neighbour by huge cliffs. Although not an island, access is by boat only, and there are no motor vehicles. Whilst Railay is southeast Asia’s premier rock climbing destination, it is far from being a destination that only climbers will enjoy. Home to two of southeast Asia’s finest beaches, it is also a great place to do nothing much except soak up the rays and the peaceful atmosphere, admire the scenery and maybe puzzle at the ant-sized antics of the climbers battling up the rock-faces. If you are one of those for whom relaxation is aided by watching other people do energetic things, Railay is the place for you. Railay is less easily accessible than most other Thai beach destinations. To get there requires a taxi from Krabi airport, followed by a boat ride, followed by a walk along the beach to your resort – not the easiest of journeys. This, plus the fact that many visitors want to stay on an island and not on a peninsula, have meant that Railay hasn’t seen quite the same vast numbers of tourists as other Thai destinations, so has been kept relatively pristine: for example, there are no buildings above palm tree height. Railay has thus been fortunate enough to have been somewhat overlooked by the mainstream tourist industry: the usually excellent as well as readable Insight Guide to Thailand, for example, completely neglects to mention the place. Railay is home to the swish Rayavadee Resort. There may be more high-brow establishments is southeast Asia, but surely none can beat Rayavadee’s location, with direct access to three beaches: Phra Nang, West Railay and East Railay. This is the only place on Railay which offers 5-star comforts and cuisine. The Railay West beach resorts serve great Thai food in a fabulous setting. The only true gourmet restaurants on Railay at are the Rayavadee, which protects its guests’ privacy by making the whole establishment, including the eateries, off-limits to non-residents. If you book by telephone in advance you may get a table, but don’t arrive too under-dressed, or you won’t be allowed in. BeachesPhra Nang is arguably the finest beach in Thailand, if not southeast Asia. Boracay beach in the Philippines used to hold this title, but has now been, except at the exclusive north end, sadly spoiled by over-population. A broad strip of white sand with massive cliffs framing each end of the beach, Phra Nang has just enough facilities: roast chicken and salad lunches cooked on the beach, massage ladies and people inconspicuously selling cold drinks. It still thankfully lacks all the things that spoil a beach: pollution, traffic, noise, over-enthusiastic hawkers, jet-skis and lager louts. The only resort on the beach is the exclusive and unobtrusive Rayavadee, but you don’t have to stay there to enjoy the place. You can reach Phra Nang on foot from anywhere on Railay or by longtail boat from Ao Nang: just bring a beach towel and a book, and you won’t have to move till it’s time to leave. If you get bored of watching the climbers falling off the surrounding cliffs onto the sand, then maybe wander across to Phra Nang cave and admire or envy all the huge red-tipped phalluses there. If you feel like stretching your legs, then maybe take the short stroll to West Railay beach, from where you can take a longtail boat back to Ao Nang. There are more pristine beaches in Thailand (Koh Hong and Koh Lao Liang spring to mind), but none that so perfectly balance natural beauty with exactly the right level of facilities. Whereas Phra Nang beach has a quiet, cosy feel, West Railay beach is more majestic. A long, broad strip of white sand framed at each end by huge cliffs, West Railay has more activities going on than does Phra Nang. On most days in high season there are games of football and beach volleyball, in which visitors are welcome to join in. The Railay Bay Resort is blessed with an unbeatable location at the beach’s southern end and is a great place to stay, if you can put up with the notoriously slow restaurant service. Just collapse onto a deck-chair by the beach-side pool for one of the best views in southeast Asia: to the left rock-climbers battle the magnificent Thaiwand Wall and to the right the bay stretches away past Tonsai to the massive Sleeping Indian cliffs, so named because that is exactly what they resemble, at night. The kilometer-long Sleeping Indian is lying on his back, with his hands folded across his midriff, his feet sticking up and a feather sticking out of his headdress – it’s an uncanny resemblance. The place to catch the sunset is at Coco’s very comfortable bar, right in the middle of the beach. This, the only bar on West Railay, is always a quiet one and has to be a candidate for being southeast Asia’s best beach bar. After sunset West Railay beach starts to empty and by midnight is usually almost completely deserted, except for the occasional party of illicit skinny-dippers, enjoying a dip au naturel at the northern end of the beach, where there are no resorts and so no people around. If single and joining in such an expedition then it’s a good idea to check that you are not going for a swim with an even number of people, as the group may turn out to consist of you and some couples, who will make you feel really silly once they hit the water and start cuddling. Midnight swims, au naturel or otherwise, are sensational on dark nights, when the brilliant-blue bioluminescence in the water lights up disturbed water like a neon Christmas tree. To best appreciate this amazing phenomenon, bring a pair of swimming goggles along and swim underwater for a while: the bioluminescence will wreath your body in a million tiny blue lights, in surely the loveliest clothes you’ve ever worn. Mangrove-lined East Railay beach is where you will find the budget accommodation and the nightlife, which is lively and wholesome, due to the absence of any girly bars. Well worth a visit is the Diamond Cave, a deep grotto lined with stalactites that sparkle so much that they look like they’re covered in diamonds. If you have a guitar, maybe take advantage of the fantastic acoustics for a strum and sing-song with some friends – don’t forget to take some candles to create a really otherworldly atmosphere for your concert. During the daytime East Railay can not compare in beauty to either West Railay or Phra Nang, but at night the mangroves look very pretty and the huge lit-up rock-faces lend the scene a spectacular back-drop. Ton Sai beach houses southeast Asia’s densest population of rock-climbers. If you don’t climb then you won’t enjoy staying here, as the climbers never talk about anything except climbing and most of them look down their noses at non-climbers. The density of the budget accommodation here has led to the same sanitary problems as are found on the central Phi Phi and Lipe beaches. Many Ton Sai residents stay for months at a time and most of them at some stage in their visit get food-poisoning, which can be serious, with hospital evacuations not unknown. Visitors who want to walk over to Tonsai from West Railay in order to watch the climbers for an hour or two are advised to do it on a full stomach, in order to avoid the need to patronize the Ton Sai restaurants. A short visit to Ton Sai is highly recommended, as it is a unique opportunity to watch, up-close, the antics of some of the world’s best rock climbers, whose gravity-defying gymnastics are simply amazing. Don’t be surprised, if when sitting at the Freedom Bar watching the climbers, a climber abseils into the chair next to you and orders a beer. Whilst in Thailand, why not visit out one of Thailand’s currently best three beach destinationsKoh Lao Liang: http://www. andamanadventures. com/kohlaoliang. shtmlAo Nang: http://www. andamanadventures. com/ao_nang. shtmlRailay/Tonsai: http://www. andamanadventures. com/railay-tonsai. shtml
