Laos is a must trip if you should be on vacation in this exotic part of Asia. If you are looking for an adventure too, then these vacation tips will point you in the right direction. Many visitors to South East Asia miss Laos out in favor of the more popular destinations of Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. It may be true that traveling to Laos is nothing less than an endurance test – but a beautiful, unspoiled wildlife and a sprinkling of exquisite temples should make the trip worth it. With its exciting terrain, well preserved natural ecosystems and numerous waterways, Laos is now emerging as a premier outdoor adventure destination in this part of Asia. One of the best things about Laos, apart from its rugged beauty and natural attractions, is the low cost of accommodation, food and transportation. Your dollars will take you a long way back and forth. It may not have such world-class cuisine as its neighboring countries, but it is not impossible to find culinary delights in many of its cities. Notably the French cuisine is the most popular among restaurants catering for tourists and lots of delicious Thai and Vietnamese dishes as well. Laotian cuisine should not be missed, as neighboring Thailand is also generous in its portion of curry and fresh ingredients that will leave you wanting more . . . that is, if it\’s your type of food. Must be careful with how much money you take with you. ATMs are not readily available outside of Laos\’ biggest cities. Credit will not help you either since it is only accepted by a small number of companies. If you have some Thai baht back from a Thailand visit, spend it in Laos because it is very welcome. You are most likely to land in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Do not hurry to the next more exotic city because Vientiane is a gem waiting to be discovered. It is a quaint and charming city that has exquisite temples and stupas. Note the remarkable influence of the French in this city\’s architecture and cuisine. Take a leisurely stroll along the well laid out streets in Vientiane. From Vientiane, continue to Luang Prabang along the banks of the Mekong River. It is a picturesque and colorful city with the many orange-robed monks and countless temples that adorn the city. Do not miss an exciting river cruise that takes you to an adventurous trip that will showcase the picturesque montage of local life along the riverbank. Do not miss the Nam Ha protected area located in northern Laos. For a more exciting way to travel to the Nam Ha, take a short detour to the town of Luang Namtha and take a boat trip to the Nam Ha. This will allow you to catch a glimpse of many birds, and reptiles along the banks of the river and surrounded by a thick jungle of blooming flora and fauna. Nam Ha Protected Site offers numerous opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts eager for some adventure. Trekking is best in this area with its exciting terrain, abundant wildlife and breathtaking panoramas. Along the way, watch out for small waterfalls where you can rest your feet and cool off in the crystal clear waters. Notice where you are going and follow your guide\’s instructions on safe and unsafe areas to the letter. UXOs or small bombs are still present in some areas, so be sure not to remove them. Other exciting destinations in Laos include Vieng Xai with its many large caves, Hongsa with their beautifully preserved architecture and Wat Phu Champasak, with its 7 century Khmer temple complex. Amazing vacation tips that guarantee discount deals for International vacations, budget flights, cheap holiday accommodation, discount entertainment, and more important international vacation tips. . . http://GlobeCheap. com
Indonesia Tourism Prospect

Indonesian Senior Statesman Makes a Critical Appraisal the Development of National Tourism.
(1/25/2010) Anak Agung Gde Agung is one of Indonesia’s most distinguished and well-informed senior statesmen. He is a graduate of Harvard and Leiden universities. He as attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in the United States and served as social services minister during the administration of President Abdurrahman Wahid.
The following article is reprinted from The Jakarta Post.
Indonesian Tourism – a National Tragedy Government officials at all levels claim that Indonesia’s tourism is doing well, with each year seeing robust advancements. On the contrary, however, all the data indicate how dismally Indonesia’s tourism has done this past decade.
In the last 12 years to 2007, tourist numbers fluctuated between 4 million and 5 million visitors. The average length of stay has declined, from 10 days in 1997 to barely 8. 5 days in 2008. Worst yet is how Indonesia compares with neighboring Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, which last year attracted 10 million, 15 million and 22 million visitors respectively.
How can such a huge discrepancy occur? How is it that Indonesia, brimming with such wealth in culture and natural beauty, attracts only a quarter of the tourists that basically barren Malaysia does?
This tragedy seems to have its source in the early 1980s, when Indonesia, strapped for funds, pointed to already world-famous Bali as its tourist cash cow. Since then, little has changed. As a result, Indonesia’s tourist attraction has been practically limited to Bali, with devastating consequences. Tourists overflow in quantum leaps to Bali, creating an explosion of infrastructure requirements that visibly erode the natural environment.
The over-concentration of tourists in Bali has not only brought an unmanageable overflow of visitors to the island – often the wrong types who cannot appreciate the unique local culture and natural environment – but has also led to an utter neglect of the other many equally attractive tourist spots throughout the archipelago.
Fabulous sites such as Borobudur, Yogyakarta, Toraja, Bunaken and Ujung Kulon, for instance, have been practically left unheeded. Such complacency has a high price, as can been seen from the destructive erosion that the overcrowding of tourists has brought to Bali’s culture and environment, and how it has stagnated Indonesia’s other richly diverse tourist destinations.
How bad have these other destinations stagnated? Here are a few horrifying statistics:
Borobudur, that World Cultural Heritage icon, was only able to muster about 85,000 foreign tourists last year, compared to more than 1 million by the more recently discovered Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Toraja these last few years has only attracted an average of about 5,000 overseas tourists a year.
Bunaken averaged only about 10,000 foreign visitors a year for as long as one can remember, versus more than 4 million for the similar Pattaya in Thailand.
Ujung Kulon, with its rare one-horned rhino, can only claim an average of 6,000 combined domestic and foreign tourists a year.
A fast recovery is imperative here and the condition for this is a complete change in mind-set. The first order of the day is for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to declare tourism a national priority and for central and regional authorities as well as the government and the private sector to work hand in hand in this effort. This needs to be followed by a preliminary phase of quick-win activities rejuvenating tourist destinations that have so far languished but need only small improvements to boost them back.
Borobudur, for instance, can be brought back to full splendor by relocating the street vendors who have been encroaching on the temple grounds and harassed visitors from fully enjoying this beautiful temple/monastery. Toraja can also attract far more tourists by repairing its forsaken airfield so that visitors can arrive there within 45 minutes from Makassar and avoid the perilous 10-hour journey through steep mountains.
As for Ujung Kulon, tourist numbers can easily rise to more than a million there within a very short time if regular and safe sea transportation is made available from Jakarta. There are other fabulous places besides those mentioned above currently suffering from lack of attention, such as Mount Bromo, Yogyakarta and Komodo Island, which only need small touches to turn them quickly into major tourist destinations while easing the pressure on overcrowded Bali.
The quick-win phase should be followed by a longer-term buildup of other tourist sites nationwide, which will require more infrastructure investment to put them on the travel map. These sites are currently still relatively unfamiliar places, but have the potential to offer inherently unique attractions and help sustain the long-term development of Indonesia’s tourist industry.
Such places include Trowulan and Kota Gede for historical interests, Banda Naira and Raja Ampat for spectacular surfing, and the Baliem Valley and Waikabubak for unparalleled ethnic experiences. There are many other such tourist sites and they can be offered in clusters of similar attractions to make the trip for tourists richer and more diverse.
Both during the quick-win and long-term phases, the tourism recovery effort has to be supported by appropriately directed promotional campaigns with a common national branding. Malaysia has its “Truly Asia”, India its “Incredible” claim while Singapore and Thailand have respectively dubbed themselves “Uniquely Singapore” and “Amazing Thailand”. Branding is important to position the country concerned at the top of mind of would-be tourists while also filtering the right tourists who can appreciate what that country offers.
Increased arrivals of tourists, who show their appreciation of the local specialties, will make the local people proud of their heritage and motivate them to strengthen it further, which in turn will bring even more like-minded tourists. This will result in an upward spiral of tourists and local people hand in hand strengthening the traditional inheritance of the land.
A successful tourism program can have many priceless benefits for Indonesia, including making it the most diverse tourist destination in the world, providing it with a sustainable and environmentally clean source of revenue larger than any of its current ones, and bringing overall prosperity to the people throughout the archipelago (and not just Bali) through grassroots empowerment and self-sustenance.

Are you looking to plan a unique or exciting overseas adventure travel itinerary that will add a little thrill and intrigue to your next vacation? Are you wanting to avoid the glittery and commercialized tourist traps in favor of experiencing the genuine life of the local cultures? If you crave adventure and authenticity, then deviate from the beaten path and prepare to explore the true heart and soul of a society’s history and heritage. You can make an ordinary vacation extraordinary by backpacking through the countryside, fishing in pristine water, biking in uncharted areas, or experiencing creative modes of transportation. Witness breathtaking scenery, catch a glimpse of unique wildlife in its natural habitat, and connect with the true lifestyle of the native people. If you want to see real history, experience real life, and observe real culture, then it is time to plan a unique overseas adventure travel vacation. A few examples are listed below:Ethiopia represents one of the oldest civilizations on earth and is a wonderful myriad of exotic wildlife, archaeological wonders, ancient architecture, and untouched scenery. The Omo River Valley of Southern Ethiopia is home to a cultural mosaic of African tribes that have been unaffected by modernization; and although getting there is difficult, the trip is definitely worth the effort. It is a land rich in tradition and overflowing with beauty. Whether you want to catch a glimpse of the famous rockhewn churches of Lalibela, study the unique agriculture, admire the fascinating beehive shaped huts, or pump up the excitement crossing rivers with an overland truck, the Omo Valley will offer a remarkable experience that will thrill and captivate the most ardent adventurer. Although it is not on the list of most popular vacation destinations, a motorbike tour of Battambang, Cambodia will not disappoint the adventure seeker. It is a destination abundant in traditional architecture, ancient temples, and fascinating wats and pagodas. Its friendly people, coupled with the beautiful scenery provided by rice fields and plantations makes Battambang one of the most stunning places in the world. And of course, no trip to the area would be complete without a ride on the creative, yet ingenious, bamboo train. A trip to rural Russia will allow you to take a step back in time and experience adventure in its most basic form. With no running water, wood-burning heat, and only the simplest of facilities, the rural Russian communities will allow you to experience this country’s incomparable history and interact with the people that help build its amazing heritage. You can enjoy the relaxed lifestyle, become involved in the daily activities of local farms, or spend some time admiring the forests and lakes that comprise the beautiful scenery. Take a back to nature, eco-friendly vacation by planning a visit to the hinterlands of Surinam. Only reachable by boat or plane, this area can boast one of the most culturally diverse populations in the world. Formerly a Dutch colony, Surinam was once known for its prosperous plantations governed by cruel masters. Escaping slaves often disappeared into the lush rainforests, forming small villages or tribes similar to those of their African Heritage. Today, a visit to the hinterlands will provide you with one of the most amazing traditional and multicultural experiences. This remote area is abounding in breathtaking waterfalls and unique wildlife and birds. Enjoy nature walks, boat trips, or simply savor the natural, untouched surroundings. Most Greece bound tourists flock to Athens, leaving Nafplio, the former Greek capital, the perfect destination for those seeking a truly unique travel adventure. The small seaside town offers beaches, beautiful scenery, and ancient sites. Whether you want to relax or explore, Nafplio has something for everyone. Known for its mountain and island fortresses and its rich cultural history, this town will allow you to avoid all the tourist traps and experience the true essence of Greece. Unique overseas adventure travel destinations will spice up your vacation and allow you to experience the genuine and authentic lifestyle of a country’s people. If you want to avoid the tourist focused destinations, then plan a trip that will lead you to the true beauty and culture buried within the heart of a land.

Thailand has always held a special place in my heart. I first travelled there in 1991, a wide eyed kid wet behind the ears with a bucket shop one way ticket to Bangkok. My grand plans of a short beach break before heading down to the east coast of Australia joining the 1000’s of Pommie pilgrims earning a right of passage didn’t exactly go to plan. I left Thailand eleven months later to return home penniless, emancipated and full of great stories, which my friends soon got bored with.

I returned a few times mainly to Bangkok and Koh Samui happy to be back in the land of smiles but feeling slightly disappointed at all the changes. The old story of development being good for the locals but not good for my sense of adventure. That didn’t deter me from joining the Imaginative Travellers Wilderness Adventure two years ago.

Arriving in Bangkok this time was different. I had a hotel booked so no lugging my pack in Bangkok’s suffocating mixture of exhaust fumes, heat and humidity looking for a clean bed. I had a group to meet too, this was also good, eating Pad Thai on your own looking for a fellow traveller to strike a conversation with can be hard work. There were 10 of us, a mix of Poms, Aussies, a Canadian, an American and a South African. We all met for dinner and shortly after my first Thai beer I knew this would be a fun trip

Bangkok to me means food and shopping and the best place to find both is the Chata Chuk weekend market. I headed there with belly empty and wallet full destined to reverse the two. The market is huge, really huge, 35 acres of cheap goodies huge and sells everything from furniture to genuine fake designer clothes. The street food is fantastic but remember the Thai’s like it hot. I left my shopping with the hotel to keep safe as I would be returning there once I finished the trip.

Off to Chiang Mai on the overnight train. I like travelling like this, sleeping while moving makes sense to me and the train is clean, functional, safe and fine. I think Chiang Mai is the perfect place to escape hectic Bangkok. It’s a peaceful, happy place and that reflects in the locals. Sight seeing will take you to the Wat Pratat Doi Suthep temple – stunning and golden on a sunny day. The next stage of the trip was trekking in the surrounding jungle, I decided I needed a massage before we set off.

A trek in the hills of Northern Thailand is a chance to escape everyday life and clear your head. The going is not too difficult for someone with fairly good fitness although if it rains the mud can be tricky. I was enjoying my own head space when we arrived at the first village of wooden homes, pecking chickens and lots of smiles, basic but I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would rather have been. Chan, our guide, was a local from a neighbouring village and before long he had us divided amongst our village hosts before the sun set and got too difficult for us city people to do anything without electric light. That night, with the noise of the surrounding jungle lying on a mattress roll on a bamboo floor, was maybe the most peaceful night’s sleep I have ever had.

The next day’s trek was shorter and we covered ground quicker, maybe we were getting used to the trekking but I think it was the excitement of the elephant ride to come that afternoon. Lunch was delicious but we were too busy watching the elephants wash in the river to notice. Elephants are brilliant creatures and being on one journeying deeper into the jungle is a fantastic experience.

The next morning Chan had us up early helping him and the village men build our rafts to take us down river to civilization. It is all part of the experience helping the guys and by helping I mean staying out of their way while they expertly craft our rafts. A serene float down to the nearest small town where our bus was waiting to take us to a hot shower and another massage.

We left Chiang Mai and headed back to Bangkok where we broke the journey up to the south with an over night stay in the city of angels.

I had heard a few good things about Khoa Sok national park, not too popular with tourists or backpackers alike due it not having a major bus stop. To get there you need to stop the bus by the 3rd banyan tree after 17th stream near the big hill and you will find a bakkie waiting to take you into the park. I’m glad we had a tour leader. The first night we slept with the birds in tree houses the second and third we stayed in raft houses on a man made dam. It is a truly beautiful area and a few of us spent the days swimming in waterfalls, flooded caves, kayaking and hiking and some of just sat back and took it all in.

How to finish this Thailand trip? On the beach of course. The islands around Krabi are what we visualize when we think of a Thai beach and they do not disappoint. The Thai’s have a word called sabai, loosely translated it means an inner happiness and contentment. I woke one afternoon from a napping on the beach and understood exactly what sabai means.

Sea Kayaking has recently taken off in Thailand as a hugely popular activity. There are a number of companies, all with experienced and trained staff, who are willing to take you on an adventure, as you explore the sights of Thailand from the sea. It is a fantastic and unique way to view the country. Sea Kayaking caters for all types of people; for beginners or for those who are a little more confident or experienced; for those wishing for just a little light kayaking as they see the sights, or for those wishing to have an adventure and explore uninhabited islands. Sea Kayaking offers an extraordinary and exciting way for you to discover your own Thailand.
There are different types of water transportation available, such as inflatable craft, or fibre glass canoes with a roof to sit on, but the most popular type and probably the best way to enjoy this experience is with the traditional kayaks, using nothing more than muscle power (although it does not necessarily have to be too strenuous!). No other way will allow you to intricately explore the rocky coastline or inlets of small islands so closely – other water transportation can be too noisy, too fast or too clumsy. Sea Kayaking in Thailand enables you to connect with the stunning scenery whilst touring the beautiful coastline, observing the wildlife on land, in the sky, and under water from a unique vantage point.
There are different types of trips one could take in a sea Kayak. For example, one could take a leisurely visit to a National Park, watching the wildlife as you paddle below, an amazing experience which is a favourite with many. There are also trips to uninhabited islands, which allow you to become intrepid explorers for the day. You can even spend a few days exploring the coastline further and camping overnight (if you don’t fancy camping more comfortable accommodation is also available!). There are also many caves, or Hong(Thai for room) to be explored, the narrow sea Kayak perfectly formed to be able to investigate these natural phenomenon. There are many and varied tours, all a perfect way to sample some of the most beautiful scenery Thailand has to offer, from white sandy beaches to tropical vegetation. All fitness levels are catered for, and there will be a trip that everyone will enjoy. Sea Kayaking in Thailand is a liberating and rewarding form of transport, enabling one to escape the hordes of tourists on land, and enjoy a tranquil and unusual way to sightsee Thailand.

Kiteboarding is a sport that has evolved considerably over the years. The combination between surfing and kiting has proven to be extremely popular, especially amongst thrill seekers. Kiteboarding requires strength, very good coordination, a love for water and of course a little bit of adventure spirit. However, this sport does not brink as much thrill and excitement if it is not practiced in the best locations on the planet. Kiteboarding Hua Hin is one of the greatest choices you can make, whether you are an amateur or a pro. Kiteboarding Thailand means choosing to practice one of the greatest water sports in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Moreover, besides great beaches and great water, kiteboarding in Thailand means great wind speed almost all year long. As you know, kiteboarding is a sport that depends very much on wind speed. The stronger the wind is, the more thrilling your ride becomes. Of course, this sport requires a certain body strength and some courses before you can adventure on your own. Kiteboarding Hua Hin is the perfect place to learn this sport or enjoy its thrills if you already are a connoisseur. As any other sport, kiteboarding also requires some technical skills and knowledge. You can get this from trainers. However, when choosing your trainer, look for someone who loves this sport and practices it because it is a lot of fun. You can find these types of trainers if you opt for kiteboarding Thailand. They are the best because in addition to their skills and knowledge about this sport, they love it and practice it, as it is truly a great sport. Another great thing about kiteboarding Hua Hin is that this place is perfect for amateurs and pros at the same time. Its beach is more than five kilometers long, the water is perfect and it has the longest windy season in all Thailand. If you choose kiteboarding Thailand you can’t go wrong. Moreover, because kiteboarding in Hua Hin is very popular, you will find many shops and schools dedicated to this sport. If you decide to try kiteboarding one day, all you have to do is fly to Thailand. You do not need anything else but your adventure spirit and the desire to try a new, amazing sport. Thailand is an amazing country, with great people and enormous appreciation for water sports. Kiteboarding Hua Hin is renowned for being one of the most thrilling and beautiful adventures you might have. Whether you are trying this sport just out of curiosity or you want to keep on practicing it, Thailand is the place to go. Kiteboarding is a successful combination between surfing and flying. Anyone who has a love for water and sports should try this amazing sport. However, the better the place, the greater the thrill, so if you choose to kiteboard or you are a kiteboarder and are looking for a great spot, choose Thailand. Kiteboarding in Hua Hin, Thailand is great fun, amazing adventure and the opportunity to see beautiful places and meet interesting party people.

For an overview of Railay’s beaches, please see my other article on this siteClimbingRailay is arguably the best bolted winter rock climbing area in the world, with over seven hundred bolted routes up limestone faces with breathtaking views over the ocean. There are only a few routes suitable for beginners, which get very crowded during the high season, so beginners are advised to take their introductory course on Koh Phi Phi, which has a greater number of easy routes. KayakingThe kayaking around the peninsula at Railay affords a less strenuous way than climbing to get up close to the sensational scenery. Several of the limestone islets off Phra Nang beach have sea caves eroded into their bases, including a few large enough to beach a kayak in. Paddling into caves and through subterranean passages is particularly interesting, but watch out for low, jagged ceilings. For those with more ambition, a short open-water crossing (about one hour of steady, heavy paddling) leads to the island of Koh Poda, which has beautiful and relatively isolated beaches, plus some decent snorkeling. A bottle of water, a hat and plenty of sun protection are essential!TrekkingSuperlatives fail when attempting to describe Railay, when seen from above. A fact that most visitors never become aware of is that you don’t need to be a rock climber to get fairly high above the beaches, the only gear you need is a stout pair of sandals. The easiest trek is to go to Phra Nang beach, then walk all the way to its northern end. The enormous rock pillar in front of you and separating you from West Railay beach is called the Thaiwand Wall, and is hollow. You can trek right through it to the West Railay side. All you have to do is follow the other people who will be going the same way and you will eventually, after climbing fixed ladders and holding on to fixed ropes, emerge in a cave high above West Railay Beach. You may recognise the view, as it appears in thousands of posters all over Thailand promoting Krabi province. Just don’t forget to take two torches with you, as the hollow insides of the Thaiwand Wall are completely pitch black. Those terrified of bats should stay away. After retreating back to Phra Nang beach the way you came, you will want to jump straight in the water to wash off all the mud with which you will by this stage be covered. From the beach, up to the cave and then back down again takes less than an hour. If the above trek has whetted your appetite, maybe you’d like to check out the Princess Lagoon too. On the right hand side of the path from Phra Nang to East Railay is a huge karst. Like the Thaiwand Wall, this one is also hollow. Not hollow from side to side, like the Thaiwand wall, but from a large hole in the top down, inside, to a sea-level lagoon. Using fixed ropes you scramble up its slippery and muddy side and then, after following the right-hand of two trails, down into its middle, you come to a hidden glen where not a sound disturbs a silence so deep you can hear a leaf fall. Descend further and you eventually reach the eerie lagoon. One of Thailand’s most special places, the lagoon is breathtakingly beautiful, particularly when lit from below by turquoise light streaming in from an underwater window to the karst’s exterior. Try not to step in, though, as the bottomless muck has quite an appetite for trekkers’ footwear: you really don’t want to have to climb back up barefoot. The last ten metres down to the lagoon require ropes when muddy and are quite dangerous even when dry. On the way out, trek back up to the point where the trails divided earlier and you took the right-hand trail. Take the other trail and after five minutes you will emerge at the “Low Viewpoint”, which isn’t so low and affords lovely views over the East beach. It is possible to climb right to the topmost point of the hollow karst, called the “High Viewpoint”, but you need a guide and a rope. This is technically a rock climb as it requires a rope to ensure safety, but it is too easy a route to really qualify as rock climbing. This route is so easy it is virtually a staircase made of stone, and can be ascended by anyone fit enough to make it up the muddy scramble necessary to get to its base. From the top of this route you walk across dagger rock to the topmost point on the karst where, underneath you, is spread out the entire Railay peninsula, in a majestic panorama of peaks, palms and beaches. This is one of the best and most easily accessible views of Railay. Almost anyone can get to see it but few ever do, as the local guides don’t like the muddy scramble to its base so don’t encourage clients to ascend it. Island-Hopping and SnorkellingRailay is a good place from which to take an island-hopping and snorkeling trip to the lovely and strangely-shaped nearby islands. Deep-pocketed Rayavadee guests can charter the resort’s Chinese junk. Koh Tup vies in beauty with Koh Poda – don’t forget your sun-block.
