Any info on safety of travel to Koa Samui Thailand?

Be careful on the roads.
Many tourists see themselves as instant expert drivers when they rent mopeds …. which they are not; especially at night after a few beers … and the locals have tendency to ignore traffic laws.

nice tourist area, but stay out of the bad part of town at night.

Being a swashbuckling archaeologist, I travel a lot.

Below is the best site for travel planning, and has great prices!

    Cheers,

If you’re going out drinking, don’t bring too much money. Also don’t bring credit cards and Passport. Just incase you get too drunk and get rolled.

I’ve been to Samui a couple of times and it’s really a case of situational awareness. The people are mostly really warm and friendly, but there are still many poor people and many of them do what they can to get their hands on your money.

Watch out for the seemingly harmless children that come out quite late at night / early in the morning as they are usually sent out by adult crime syndicates to look cute then pickpocket from you.

Also be safe when driving… there are a huge number of motorcycle / scooter traffic incidents because the road rules are very relaxed (ok, so I’m not sure there is any at all) and foreigners all take to the roads and let loose a little. I would highly recommend wearing a helmet if you must hire a motorcycle.

Overall it’s really a wonderful place and the people are so lovely and friendly… I’m sure you will love it!

    best not rent a motorbike
    keep one credit card seperate
dont eat anything stupidly spicy if you’re not used to it, it’s not big ,or clever
be very careful of sunburn, tropical sun is ferocious
    leave wildlife alone
never get into arguments, especially with thai ’s,it wont end just with shouting
try not to get too drunk?
take extreme care with your bag and packing when you come home

However Thailand in general is very safe, you’re more likely to get fleeced than stabbed, just exercise normal caution and keep your guard up…you’re on holiday, crooks aren’t

Stay off motorcycles, watch your wallet, stay away from drugs, don’t get to drunk and use a condom. Then all of Thailand is safe.
