The Third Sex

March 9th, 2010

The Third Sex
Through the lives of three “kathoey,” male transvestites, this introduction to transgender in Thailand places a cultural, historical, religious, biological, and psychological emphasis on international traditions of sexuality. A fascinating anthropological and sociological exploration, the context of transgender is detailed through the challenges and joys found in Manat, Lek, and Akorn as they travel through the social rites of passage to become kathoeys. As a part of the cultural landscape of Thailand, the kathoeys are a modern expression of an archaic tradition, and through these personal stories a wider discussion of transgender and the existence of a “third sex” in international societies emerges.

Pre-natal Treatment at Chiva-som International Health Resort, Destination Spa Thailand

March 8th, 2010

 Pre-natal treatment

Pregnancy can be one of the most fulfilling times in a woman’s life. The joy of bringing another human being into the world creates a tremendous feeling of contentment and anticipation, but it is also a time of great physical and emotional upheaval. So the Spa at Chiva-Som has designed a range of new treatments to help pre and postnatal guests enjoy a secure and tranquil experience.

Together with exercise, good diet and rest, these treatments can play an important role in helping you cope with the stresses of nine months of pregnancy and postnatal recovery.

The Pre and Post Natal Body Treatment combines soothing massage with the therapeutic benefits of E’SPA products, and has been carefully designed to improve the tonicity of the skin. It’s performed on a bed designed for comfort and safety during pregnancy.

After deep skin cleansing and a gentle body polish, you will have a luxurious body massage with E’SPA’s specially developed Nourishing Body Oil. Some essential oils such as basil and marjoram should be avoided during pregnancy, so the silky Nourishing Body Oil is based on Jojoba, blended with Calendula, Grape Seed and Sweet Almond Oil.

We then envelop your body in warm Marine Mud to nourish the skin, and end with a deep acupressure point scalp massage.

The Spa at Chiva-Som offers many other treatments for pregnant and nursing mothers. These include Floatation, which induces a deep state of mental relaxation and helps to eliminate stress and tension.

With Oriental Foot Massage you recline in the Chiva-Som Music Therapy chairs as the therapist works reflex points in the feet and ankles to balance the entire body, stimulate the circulatory system and alleviate muscle tension.

For ultimate pampering, try the Bath Of Chiva, performed in the candlelit luxury of your own room as tension is soaked away in a hydrating milk bath with rose petals and chamomile flowers.

Please ask at reception for more details of all these treatments.

How long is customs to get to Thailand from the USA?

March 8th, 2010

I am going to be travelling to Thailand. I have no idea how customs works. How early do I have to show up at the airport, or does that not matter. Is the customs process here or in Thailand when I land? How much time should I account for for customs? If I plan on being back by April 26th, when should I by my arrival ticket for? The 24th, 25th?

You do not clear customs or immigration when leaving the US, only when you arrive in Thailand and when you return to the US. Most airlines recommend arriving three hours before an international flight, the lines to check-in and to clear security can be long.

The time it takes to clear customs in Thailand and when you return to the US depends on how many other international flights arrive around the same time as yours. It can take as little as 20-30 minutes to clear immigration, wait for your luggage and clear customs, but can easily take an hour.or more, especially if you are pulled aside to be searched. Knowledge of customs allowances and what is prohibited will make clearing customs easier.

Most flights from Thailand to the US arrive the same day you leave because of the time difference unless you depart Thailand late in the day or at night or have a long layover. The US is 12-15 hours ahead of Thailand, on many flights with short or fairly short layovers you will arrive just a few hours later than you actually left on the same calendar day, especially on flights to the west coast. All airlines list the day you depart and the day you arrive, check to be sure.

Thailand is bracing for fresh political upheaval as the country’s supreme court prepares to deliver its verdict on the fortune of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister ousted in a 2006 coup.

The court is deciding whether to seize more than $2bn from Thaksin’s frozen assets.

But in his stronghold in the north of the country, he the former PM is as popular as ever.
